Basic Skills

The teaching of basic skills is the cornerstone of all that we do at English Martyrs'.  Our children take part in two, half an hour sessions a day dedicated to the teaching of English and Maths basic skills.  The children will then apply or practice these skills in the maths and topic sessions.

Some of examples of the skills taught in maths:

Times tables

Counting numbers

Ordering numbers

rounding numbers

x10

Partitioning numbers

Calculations

Fraction, percentage and decimals

etc, etc

Literacy basic skills sessions take the form of phonics for Rec/Yr 1 and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) for years 2 and above.  The SPaG sessions are planned on a two week cycle where the children will practice spelling words associated with a spelling pattern, learn and practice using a specific punctuation mark and learn and practice a specific grammatical device
